We got a Zodiac cruise around Cierva Cove, which had LOTS of pack ice and LOTS of whales. The whales were mostly sleeping. They lay near the surface, then came to the surface to breathe, then back to laying near the surface. Lather, rinse, repeat. There were a couple of awake whales. The whale fluke pictures are actually from the afternoon on our way to Palaver Pointer, but I wanted to include them with the other whale pics.
And now on to ice. The ice is white when there is lots of air in it. As air gets compressed out, it appears blue. And when there is no air, it is clear. Here's some close-to-clear ice.
Here's some blue ice for comparison.
And this gives an idea of the pack ice we were navigating through.
And finally, here's a movie of the blue ice rising from the depths, or so it seems...
The blue ice is breathtaking. These pictures were so awesome. Jealous.
ReplyDeleteWow, whales close up! The best I've seen is the disturbed water where a whale was a few seconds before I could get a view ;)
